The Afterburn Effect: Workout Moments Brands Should Capitalise On

Challenge

Understanding the workout window that drives purchase

Health clubs have always been a channel for reaching active audiences. But what happens to members’ mood, mindset and spending behaviour in the moments during and after they leave the health club floor? Following the 2025 Gym Z study, Amped partnered with Differentology again to find out.

The aim was to establish whether health and fitness environments create a distinct, commercially valuable window for brands and how members’ behaviour compares to people who don’t train in a health club environment.

Research Approach

A 2,000-strong study into the workout mindset

  • Partnered with leading consumer research agency Differentology to design and run a bespoke quantitative study.
  • Surveyed 2,000 UK adults (18+): 1,500 health club members and 500 non-members, with the latter split evenly between exercising non-members and non-exercisers.
  • Explored mood, motivation and purchase behaviour in the moments, hours and days immediately after a workout.
  • Benchmarked member responses against non-member groups to isolate the commercial value of the health club environment.

Key Insights

Motivated, receptive and ready to buy

Health club members leave every workout in a distinct state: happier, more focused and significantly more open to buying.

90%

of members are more or equally likely to buy things after a workout

76%

of members felt emotionally happier after a workout

Mood becomes motivation

  • 80% feel more positive and in a better mood immediately after a workout, and 78% feel more motivated to improve. This lift doesn’t fade at the door. It carries into the rest of the day and into purchase decisions.

Purchases feel earned, not impulsive

  • 85% feel like treating themselves for completing a workout, and 84% say they’ve earned a reward. Post-workout purchases are driven by mood and momentum, not spur-of-the-moment impulse, which makes them more predictable and more targetable.

A trusted, high-attention environment

  • 88% of members notice at least one type of advertising in the health club, and 63% say they trust it and find it more relevant than ads seen elsewhere. Members aren’t just present. They’re paying attention, and they trust what they see.

A digital layer that extends the moment

  • 64% use social media to find out about new trending brands, more than double the rate of exercising non-members (28%) and non-exercisers (21%). The health club environment doesn’t just create a moment, it feeds a habit that continues on members’ phones long after they’ve left.

“After a workout I feel energised, which sets my mood for shopping.”
